KADAKNATH : BONE OF CONTENTION

A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place. It provides the information regarding the origin of the product. With the passage of time, the very indication becomes the identity of quality, characteristics and reputation.

Recently, the battle between Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for the nativity of protein rich breed of chicken is being witnessed commonly known as ‘Kadaknath’. Both the states are making significant claims over the origin of the “Kali Masi” (fowl having black flesh) and want to be decorated with the GI tag. The two neighboring states have filed applications with the Geographical Indication registry office in Chennai to obtain the ‘GI tag’.As confirmed by many experts 'Kadaknath' is known for its high iron content and much lower cholesterol than other breeds, and sells at a much higher price than other varieties.

Madhya Pradesh claims that the origin of Kadaknath is in the Jhabua district of the state as confirmed by the Madhya Pradesh animal husbandry department's additional deputy director Dr BhagwanManghnani. The state claims that the it had set up the first poultry farm for this breed of chicken in 1978 in Jhabua. It is also claimed that the government-run hatcheries in Madhya Pradesh produce about 2.5 lakh chickens of the Kadaknath variety annually.

This is not the first attempt for the quest of GI tag. Earlier in 2012, National organisation namely “GraminVikas Trust of Jhabua has applied for the same.

Also, in the same line Chhattisgarh is claiming the GI tag. As stated by the chairman of Global Business Incubator Private limited(GBIPL) the chicken has origin of Dantewada district of the state. Many private poultry farmers are also engaged in rearing the bird in Chhattisgarh. It is believed that the chicken is reared in a natural environment in Dantewada and not fed with artificially ready-made fodder. Many tribal of Dantewada are engaged in the production of about four lakh chicken of the variety for meat annually.

The state administration has applied for the same last month only while taking assistance from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry(FICCI). The state has shown a considerable increase in the production of the said variety in recent five years and hence claiming the GI tag.

Both states have equally produces their evidences. Lets see which state comes with flying colour.
