The Supreme Court has issued notice to Civil Aviation Ministry and Air India on a petition filed by a transgender against the airline.

Shanavi Ponnusamy, a 28- year-old who became a woman after sex reassignment surgery in 2014 wants to know why she can't become a flight attendant.

The Supreme Court has sought the response of the civil aviation ministry and Air India on a petition filed by Shanavi, who has alleged she is being systematically refused consideration for employment as a flight attendant by the national carrier just because she is a transgender.

Her advocate Praveen Swarup told a bench of CJI Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud that despite the SC's 2012 ruling recognising the third gender and conferring equal rights on transgenders, Shanvi was discriminated against by the civil aviation ministry. The latter reportedly closed the case, saying "transgender category currently doesn't exist in the recruitment policy". [Inputs TOI]
