Top German Court rules in favour of banning diesel cars in cities to combat pollution

Leipzig: In a new blow to the car industry,  Germany's highest federal administrative court has ruled in favour of allowing major cities to ban heavily polluting diesel cars. It is going to be hugely damaging for Europe's largest car market as the car values are expected to dip and car manufacturers will be required to carry out costly modifications to meet the standards set.

The decision came when several German states appealed against bans imposed by local courts in Stuttgart and Duesseldorf in cases brought by environmental group DUH over poor air quality. Their appeal was rejected and local courts order was upheld.

Public sentiment has been against diesel engine cars ever since Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating U.S. exhaust tests, regarding particulate matter and nitrogen oxide (NOx), two gases which are known to cause respiratory diseases.

This ruling is expected to put Merkel government in trouble as Car makers, who are considered close to her government are going to be badly hit. Besides such a ban could lead to disruption in public transport which could turn the public mood against her.
