Supreme Court Issues Notice to Centre in PIL Urging Ban on BlueWhale Game

The matter appeared on the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud. The court has given three weeks time to Centre to furnish an answer.

Advocate CR Jaya Sukin represented the petitioner while the PIL was filed through AoR Narendra Kumar Verma.

The petition asserts that the game is of a foreign origin and has spread across the world. It argues that the game encourages the youngsters to commit suicide.

As put in the petition:

“Blue whale online game encourage people to take part in increasingly dangerous harmful dares that culminate in an instructions to kill themselves…

…Blue Whale game is snatching the life of children and adults in the guise of the game which would be caused very damage to Our Country.”

It also states that the structure of the game is such that the person playing it cannot exit it at will and parents are rendered helpless in dealing with the situation.

It cites different cases in India as well as in the world where many people have lost their lives after playing BlueWhale game. Additionally, it's mentioned that the game doesn’t belong to one particular site but is being promoted on various social media platforms.

“…game is growing popularity through Facebook, Google, WhatsApp Instagram, Microsoft, and Yahoo.”

The petition alleges that the government of India has failed in taking appropriate measures to restrict the game from getting promoted and hence seeks a total ban on the game.

Apparently, Delhi High Court had earlier issued a notice to Facebook, Google, Yahoo in light of a similar petition whereas the Madras High Court had taken suo moto cognizance of the game.
