In a big move towards infusing transparency in the functioning of judiciary, judicial proceedings will be audio and video recorded in all courtrooms across the country in the near future.

The top court said the installation of CCTV cameras in the courts would be in larger public interest, discipline and security.

A bench of Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit also sought a report from the Centre on the progress made on the issue in compliance with its earlier order in the matter.

"What privacy? This is not a case of privacy. We don't need privacy here. Judges don't need privacy in court proceedings. Nothing private is happening here. We all are sitting in front of you," the bench observed.

Additional Solicitor General Pinky Anand, appearing for Centre, said the Ministry of Law and Justice has to sanction a proposal for financial outlay, which could be accorded any time soon.

Chhattisgarh has already installed CCTVs in trial courts of three districts. Delhi Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana in two districts each, Tamil Nadu in five and the entire state of Sikkim in all trial courts.

States such as Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Manipur, Bihar, and Rajasthan have initiated the process and were in communication with respective high courts and Ministry of Information and Technology, the ministry told the Supreme Court.

An affidavit, filed by the deputy secretary of the Union Law Ministry, CK Reejonia, stated that the Centre has taken necessary actions for audio and video recording of the proceedings in the courtrooms and will continue to pursue the matter with state governments and high courts.
