Supreme Court Declines To Intervene In Jallikattu Protest

The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday declined to take cognisance of the ongoing protest to revoke ban on Jallikattu in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Apex court has asked the petitioner to approach the Madras High Court.

It is to be noted that the Madras High Court said on January 18 that it won't interfere in the issue as the ban decision was imposed by the top Court.

“The apex court is seized of the matter. When it is so, even the High Court and Tamil Nadu government cannot do anything and moreover, Marina Road is not a place for any demonstrations. The court does not want to interfere at this stage," stated the Madras bench.

Tamil Nadu has been urging the Centre repeatedly to issue an ordinance for the conduct of Jallikattu, held during the Tamil harvest festival Pongal in mid-January.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi today to discuss the issue.

The protest has gained massive number of supporters since it was initiated almost two days back. Over 5,000 people joined the protests against the move at Chennai's Marina Beach on Tuesday and the protests are still continuing in full swing as a large pool of people including prominent faces continue to join the outcry.

The situation was triggered after more than 200 individuals were taken into custody on Monday night after they held protests at Alanganallur village demanding lifting of the ban on Jallikattu.

In 2014 the Supreme Court had outlawed Jallikattu and the state government's review petition was also dismissed last December. The Supreme Court on January 12 had rejected a plea urging it to pass judgement on the sport before Pongal festival. Tamil Nadu has been urging the Centre repeatedly to issue an ordinance for the conduct of Jallikattu, held during the Tamil harvest festival Pongal in mid-January.
