Senior lawyers seeks new rules for elevation to higher judiciary

According to a report published in TOI, senior lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court have demanded that new rules should be laid down for judges’ elevation to the high courts across the country, as well as the Supreme Court.

Further, the lawyers want the norms to be made similar to the guidelines formulated for designation of advocates as senior advocates.

In fact, the senior lawyers have also summoned a meeting on August 24 to talk about the issue concerning the preparation of a set of norms for the appointment of judges to HCs and the SC.

Birender Singh Rana, secretary of the senior advocates’ bar association, has asked all the senior advocates to attend the meeting scheduled to be held within the Chandigarh HC premises in a senior advocate’s room. This is perhaps the first time that a body of senior lawyers of a high court has taken such an initiative.

“When there can be rules for designation of senior advocates, appointments to the advocate-general’s office, why cannot there be rules for elevation of advocates being considered for the judge’s post in the high courts and the Supreme Court”, said a senior lawyer while talking to TOI.

The lawyer further added that such rules would ensure transparency in judicial appointments, and would also speed up the elevation process.
