SC TO HEAR PLEAS CHALLENGING CONSTITUTIONAL VALIDITY OF CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT ON SEPTEMBER 12

New Delhi: On September 12, the Supreme Court will hear a batch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim migrants who came in the country from Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Afghanistan on or before December 31, 2014.

A Bench of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat will hear the matter.

Despite nationwide protests against the legislation, the Supreme Court issued notice in a batch of over 140 petitions in January 2020, without staying the Act. Later, the Court hinted that the case might be heard by a Constitution Bench, but no order was issued to that effect.

In response to the petitions, the Central Government stated that the CAA is "benign legislation" with a specific purpose that should not be conflated beyond the legislative intent.
