SC to govt: People allowed with genuine Reasons to Depositing Demonetised Currency

The Supreme Court suggested the Centre accept old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 of genuine persons and take a decision after verifying the authenticity of an individual case after demonetisation issue.

The Centre sought two weeks time to seek instructions from the government to inform the court.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice J S Khehar asked Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar to seek instructions by July 18.

“Allow a window for genuine peoplewhere it is not such cases which we entertained in court. We are satisfied with their reasons for not depositing the old notes but there ids no window,” CJI said.

“Take the money and do whatever after verification. If u don’t do it then there is a serious issue”, said the Court.

Solicitor General admitted that Reserve Bank of India should have taken up atleast individual cases and sought more time from the court.

After demonetisation period from November 8 to December 31, 2016 government had not allowed any other persons to deposit old notes in banks.

The government has, however, allowed those people to deposit money who were abroad during demonetisation period.

The bench was hearing the batch of PILs alleging that PM in his speech had assured to allow genuine persons but on December 31 notification, the government had closed all windows for people.
