SC Set to hear Petition against Demolition of Sikkim’s Gurudwara

Supreme Court on August 29, accepted to hear the petition alleging the Sikkim State authorities that they intend to demolished Gurudwara in the name of renovation and illegally removing a Holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, from its rightful place.

The petitioner seeking the Supreme Court’s direction to hold the deconstruction of Gurudwara in the State in the garb of renovating it. The bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra ordered the petitioner to serve a copy of his plea to Sikkim’s standing counsel and reserved further hearing on tomorrow.

The Bench comprising two other Justices P C Pant and D Y Chandrachud asked the petitioner that why he didn’t approached the High Court in the matter, instead of approaching directly to the Supreme Court.

The petitioner Amritpal Singh Khalsa, then replied that the complaint was lodged in a great urgency and the gravity of the situation is far greater to be neglected any longer. The threat of demolition of Gurudwara Gurudongmar was getting deeper and it would take time to travel from Sikkim. He alleged that the Holy Book, Guru Granth Sahib was removed in a great hurry without following any code of conduct or concerning Sikh priests, and has ruined the reputation of the Gurudwara.

The desperate urgency of the State Government to deconstruct the Gurudwara is getting relentless and is our greatest concern in the matter, the petitioner said.

The petitioner also claimed that Gurudwara Gurudongmar is the home of sufficient historic documents and books related to the foundation of Sikh community and held the testimony of Guru Nanak’s visit to the Gurudongmar. Such documents needed to be preserved safely, instead the State Authorities removed them, disrespectfully.

It has sought the Supreme Court’s direction of prohibiting the authorities from carrying out any demolition or renovation work at the site.

The Court sought that if the Government realizes to perform any renovation or demolition work of Gurudwara, a prior notice of one month should be issued to the Sikh priests so that appropriate actions to relocate the “Guru Granth Sahib” and other historic documents as per the Sikh code of conduct could be taken.
