SC Issues Notice to Uttar Pradesh’s Government over Fake Police Encounters

The Supreme Court has sought response of the Yogi Adityanath’s government on a PIL seeking investigation into fake police encounters in Uttar Pradesh.

The PIL filed by an NGO, People's Union for Civil Liberty (PUCL) came for hearing before a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud.

Lawyer Sanjay Parikh, appearing for the petitioner, alleged that over 500 encounters have been carried out by the UP Police recently, in which 58 persons have been killed.

The SC bench then issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government seeking its reply on the issue in two weeks.

However, the bench refused to entertain the plea filed by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which had earlier issued notice to the UP government on the matter, be also made a party in the proceedings.

The SC bench has listed the matter for further hearing in three weeks from today.
