Salman Khan pronounced guilty in the blackbuck poaching case: Gets Five year in jail

Jodhpur,Rajasthan : Salman Khan, Hindi film industry's leading actor was today pronounced guilty in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case by a court in Jodhpur. Other co-accused actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu were let off. Salman has been given five years in jail along with a fine of Rs 50,000. Since the jail term is 5 years, he can apply for bail but he will have to spend at least one night in jail.

Bishnoi's have expressed unhappiness over other actors being let off and said we will appeal against the order.

The actors were accused of illegally hunting down two Blackbucks in village Kankani near Jodhpur on the night of October 1 in 1998.These actors were there in Jodhpur for shooting of the film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.

Charges were made against Salman under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and against other actors, both under  Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code. The maximum punishment under Section 51 is six years.

All the accused were present in court when the verdict was read out. Salman's sisters Alvira and Arpita were also present in court.

The hearing in the matter ended on March 28. During the hearing, public prosecutor Bhawani Singh Bhati argued there was sufficient evidence to support the charges against the actors. Contesting these allegations, H M Saraswat, the defence counsel for Salman Khan, had said there are many loopholes in the prosecution's story and the prosecution has failed to prove the case beyond any doubt. "Prosecution has failed to prove allegations against the accused and has engaged in tempering and fabricating evidences and documents as well as roping in fake witnesses to prove the case. It has even failed to prove that blackbucks were killed by gunshots. Hence such investigation cannot be trusted upon', said Saraswat.
