PM Narendra Modi, calls for 'Janata Curfew'

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi formed a Covid-19 task force to establish steps to counter the economic consequences, advised employers not to slash worker's salaries, and called for a "Janata Curfew"on Sunday. He warned about the widespread economic effects of the outbreak and highlighting the need for readiness.

On Thursday i.e. 19th March 2020, PM said on a TV “There is a need to follow two important things to fight this pandemic — resolve and restraint”. He appealed to companies to behave empathically, and assuring people about no shortages, further asking them to avoid panicking. Senior citizens should stay indoors and others should not leave their homes unless necessary.

In the past few days, it is appearing as if we have averted the crisis, and everything is okay. Complacency in respect of a global pandemic like coronavirus is not appropriate, the PM added. He stressed that social distancing is very necessary and successful.

PM also announced thatJanata Curfew would be enforced from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on 22nd March 2020 (Sunday), similar to blackouts in wartime.

During this curfew, we shall neither leave our homes, nor get onto the streets or roam about our localities. Only those associated with emergency and essential services will leave home,” the PM said. “This Janata Curfew will in a way be a litmus test for us. This is also the time to see how prepared India is to fight off a global pandemic like the coronavirus.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be leading the economic task force.

This global pandemic is also going to have a wide-ranging impact on the economy. Keeping in mind the economic challenges arising from the coronavirus, the government has decided to set up a Covid-19 Economic Response Taskforce under the leadership of the finance minister,” the prime minister said. “This taskforce will take decisions in the near future, based on regular interactions and feedback from all stakeholders, and analysis of all situations and dimensions. This taskforce will also ensure that all steps taken to reduce the economic difficulties are effectively implemented.

In his speech PMalso requested people not to go to hospitals for regular check-ups, and to delay any surgery by one month so as not to overburden medical facilities and staff. He also warned people against rumours and appealed to employers not to slash the salaries of those working in their businesses and homes.

The prime minister also called on the country to express its gratitude on March 22 at 5 p.m. to those who work to keep the country running, such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, municipal staff and airport employees, by running out on their balconies or standing at their doors and windows by clapping, banging on their plates or ringing bells.

During the coming weeks, he has urged people for their help, as no vaccine had yet been discovered.
