One more additional judge gets appointed to Madras High Court

The Central Government has notified the appointment of Additional advocate general of Tamil Nadu, B Pugalendhi, as an additional judge of the Madras High Court.

As per the notification issued by the Central Government on Saturday, Pugalendhi will serve as an additional judge of the Madras HC for a two year period from the date on which he will assume office.

With his elevation, the strength of the Madras HC has increased to 60, against the sanctioned strength of 75 judges, which also includes the name of Justice Vineet Kothari whose transfer to the Court was notified recently. Justice Kothari, however, is yet to assume charge of his office.

Although Pugalendhi’s name for elevation as an additional judge of the Madras HC had been recommended much earlier by the SC Collegium, however, his appointment had been deferred by at least five months by the Collegium, as it had received ‘certain adverse but unconfirmed inputs against him’.

In fact, Pugalendhi was supposed to have been appointed as additional judges of the high court along with seven other judges on June 1, this year.

Pugalendhi, who is currently serving as additional advocate general for the Madurai bench of the Tamil Nadu HC, has over 25 years of experience in the bar.
