Nizamuddin gathering- a ticking time bomb for the country?

A religious congregation of 2,000 people which was held at a mosque in the Nizamuddin area in Delhi, has led to many positive Covid-19 cases as six of the people who returned to Telangana after attending the congregation died of the virus and positive cases are emerging from at least five other regions such as J&K, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Visitors who attended the Nizamuddin congregation also include a religious preacher who lost his life in Srinagar after he was tested positive for Covid-19. The man also attended a seminar in Deoband in Uttar Pradesh before returning to Kashmir. Other tourists, apart from him, include an Indonesian man and six Saudi men, who were sent back in view of the outbreak. In the Markaz itself more than 1,500 residents were quarantined. According to many sources, a facility is coming up for these people at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

From 13th to 15th March nearly 2,000 people, including foreigners, attended a religious congregation. However, some locals have stated that several people continued to stay at the premises after March 15th. Individuals who attended the event travelled to various states. The Delhi government has ordered a FIR to be lodged against Markaz's head, Maulana Saad Kandalvi for endangering thousands of people's lives.

The Delhi Government stated, “By this gross act of negligence several people’s life has been endangered. It was the responsibility of every citizen to proactively avoid such gathering of people during the lockdown and this is nothing but a criminal act. After the Centre informed us about the first positive patient and requested assistance we moved all symptomatic patients to our medical facilities and as a safety precaution all non-symptomatic contacts have been moved to the quarantine centres"

The officials are concerned and said they are conducting contact-tracing to identify the people in Srinagar, Deoband and Delhi who are exposed to the virus. The officials also said that after the congregation, many attendees travelled across the nation.  In Andhra Pradesh one of the attendees also tested positive for coronavirus.
