KARNATAKA GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES 2% QUOTA IN ALL GOVERNMENT JOBS FOR ATHLETES

New Delhi: The Karnataka government has announced that 2% of all government jobs will be reserved for meritorious athletes from the state. At the moment, the sports quota only applies to the police and forest departments. The government has recognized that providing financial security for athletes is critical, CM Basavaraj Bommai said at a ceremony honouring medal winners from the recent Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

As a result, we've decided to make reservations available to all government departments. He also stated that the government has decided to recognise basketball as the official sport of the state. We will soon organise a talent hunt in rural areas, he said. Weightlifter Gururaj Poojary of Udupi, who won India's first medal on the Gold Coast in 2018 and a bronze medal in Birmingham, believes athletes would win more medals if the government provided more support.

He stated that, in comparison to other states, Karnataka provides lower cash incentives and urged the CM to ensure that medal winners are given government jobs. According to K Govindraj, president of the Karnataka Olympics Association and a strong supporter of quotas for athletes, the decision will immediately open up at least 1,000 jobs for athletes. For the first time in 12 years, the government issued a notice to recruit athletes for the police force last year. While the department did have a sports quota, it was eliminated in 2009 for a variety of reasons before being reinstated later.
