Government is busy welcoming Trump while the National Capital engulfs in Violence

New Delhi: Delhi has been a hotbed of protests against the controversial new law on citizenship and during the last two months protesters have been camping out in several areas. Hundreds of people in support of the new legislation clashed on Monday with those who opposed it, with stone pelting from both sides.

Delhi has been hit by a series of deadly protests with Hindu nationalist and communist groups ahead of the US President Donald Trump's visit. During clashes in several parts of the Indian capital, three protesters were killed and police said one officer had died in the violence.

Clashes broke out in neighborhoods in the northeast parts of the city between pro-government nationalist groups and critics of the law, which provides a fast path to citizenship for immigrants from three neighboring Muslim-majority countries i.e. Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, as long as they are not Muslims.

Videos on social media showed burning homes and shops, mobs pelting each other with stones, and a man firing a gun as he approached police officers who were trying to intervene and calm the situation.

Trump's state visit, including a speech before 100,000 people at a "Namaste Trump" rally, promises to boost trade and fight terrorism, and a visit to the Taj Mahal, where he shook hands with Yogi Adityanath, a hardline Hindu monk and politician known for his anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Trump made no public remarks about the unrest shaking Delhi or the debate on citizenship law, although a senior Trump administration official said the president would raise the issue of religious freedom in his talks with Modi in a briefing to reporters last week.
