Evict illegal occupants from Allahabad University hostels: HC

The Allahabad High Court today directed the district magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police to provide "full assistance to Allahabad University authorities" in evicting illegal occupants from the varsity's hostels.

A division bench of justices Arun Tandon and Rekha Dixit also told the officials that in the event of failure to comply with the aforementioned directions, they shall "file personal affidavits disclosing the reasons for such cooperation not being extended".

The court also directed the AU registrar to ensure strict compliance with the university's rules wherein it has been lay down that all hostel rooms shall be vacated by April 30 of every calendar year, provided examinations of occupations were over.

As per the rules, all hostels should thereafter be cleaned and whitewashed so as to be ready for use by a fresh lot of allottees.

Fixing April 20 as the next date of hearing in the matter, the court also directed the registrar to file a report "showing action taken for removal of illegal occupants from hostels".

The court was hearing a petition filed by MA student Dharamveer Singh, who had contended that despite having been allotted a room in the university's Tara Chand hostel, he was not getting entry because of huge presence of illegal occupants.
