EU REJECTS MANIFESTO OF FACEBOOK FOR ONLINE REGULATION

Facebook's proposal to the EU to tone down what the company called ' intrusive regulation '. European Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said it was up to Facebook to adopt European standards, not the other way around.

The proposal came in the form of a whitepaper arguing for accountability in the content moderation systems and procedures of companies as the best way to create incentives for companies to balance values such as security, privacy and freedom of expression responsibly.

It also argued that any national regulatory approach to combating offensive content would respect the global scale of the internet and the importance of cross-border communications, and asked regulators to consider their effect on free speech and expression.

If designed well, new frameworks for regulating harmful content can contribute to the internet’s continued success by articulating clear ways for government, companies, and civil society to share responsibilities and work together,” in a post Facebook wrote that detailed the proposal. “Wrongly crafted, these efforts pose unintended consequences that could make people less secure online, stifle speech and delay innovation”.

This was discussed in the EU's attempt to hold Internet companies accountable for hate speech and other unlawful speeches published on their websites.

On Wednesday, Breton will announce plans to leverage the EU's industrial data archive and challenge the domination of Facebook, Google and Amazon.

Facebook cannot push away all the responsibility. Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg have to answer themselves a question [of] who do they want to be as a company and what values they want to promote,” Europe Justice Chief Vera Jourova said after she met Mark Zuckerberg to discuss the issue. “It will not be up to governments or regulators to ensure that Facebook wants to be a force of good or bad”.
