Delhi HC to Hear Habeas Corpus Plea Challenging Gautam Navlakha's Arrest on Sept 14

The Delhi High Court on Thursday deferred hearing on a habeas corpus plea, filed regarding rights activist-journalist Gautam Navlakha’s arrest, to September 14.

A two-judge bench of the Delhi HC comprising Justices S. Muralidhar and Vinod Goel adjourned the hearing after noting that the Supreme Court had, on Wednesday, stayed the transit remand orders and directed the police to keep Navlakha along with other arrested rights activists under house arrest till September 6.

As the Supreme Court has, by the aforementioned interim order, extended the house arrest of the Petitioner, this Court does not consider it appropriate to proceed further. It will await the further orders of the Supreme Court”, the bench said.

The habeas corpus plea was filed on Navlakha’s behalf by his counsel Nitya Ramakrishnan and Warisha Farasat.

It was the second time in the last five months, when the Pune police on Tuesday raided the houses of alleged Maoist sympathisers across the country and detained five of them.

The raids were carried out in six states, including Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and Haryana in connection with Bhima-Koregaon violence.
