Dalit Lynching at Rajkot: NHRC sends notice to Gujarat government

In yet another case of lynching, a Dalit ragpicker was beaten to death while his wife Jaya and aunt Savita were roughed up by five people.

In the wake of this recent unfortunate incident, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Gujarat government seeking a report on the incident within four weeks.

The deceased, identified as Mukesh Vaniya, was lynched on May 20 over suspicion of stealing scrap from a factory.

All the five accused, including four persons and a minor boy (aged 17 years), were detained by the police in connection with the incident after a video of the crime went viral on social media.

The video purportedly shows two persons taking turns to beat Vaniya, using a stick while one other person was seen holding him by a rope tied to his waist.

Vaniya succumbed to his injuries while being taken to a government hospital in Rajkot.

Observing contents of a media report, NHRC said, “if true, (the case) raises serious issues of violation of human rights of the victim”.

Further, the commission issued a statement saying, “it has issued a notice to the chief secretary to the government of Gujarat, calling for a report in the matter within four weeks, along with measures taken for relief to the affected families”.

The people arrested in the case so far include Jaysukh Radadiya (39), owner of Radadiya Industries, his two brothers-in-law Chirag Vitthal Vora (28) and Divyesh Kishorebhai Vora (32) and his associate Tejas Kanubhai Zala (29). All of the accused have been booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and sections of the IPC 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), and 148 (armed with deadly weapon).
