Construction works, government offices to begin functioning from 15 April 2020- Meghalaya Government

Mr. Conrad Kongkal Sangma, Meghalaya's Chief Minister, held a joint meeting with all of Meghalaya's cabinet ministers of state government and made several decisions on the ongoing lockdown phase.

At the meeting, it is agreed that the Meghalaya State schools and educational institutions will remain closed until April 30th, 2020. The cabinet also addressed the interest of Meghalayan residents, both students, and working citizens, with a total of around 2192 people residing in different parts of the country. Most had expressed a desire to return to the economy. It further held that the government had agreed to order stranded citizens to refrain from traveling back home until the end of April 2020, taking into account the welfare of people in the state and the protection of those stranded citizens.

The reassurance was given to the citizens of Meghalaya as the cabinet agreed to resume the services of private transport, government-sanctioned construction works in the last financial year, government offices and weekly markets in rural areas from April 15th, 2020, with adherence to the strict "COVID-19" protocols as recommended by the health department.

The Meghalaya Government has also agreed to provide financial assistance to all wage earners, daily laborers and small traders (unregistered daily wage earners) who are out of work during the COVID-19 'lockdown' by way of the Chief Minister’s Relief Against Wage Loss Scheme for daily wage earners at the rate of Rs. 700 per week, except for beneficiaries who are already registered under Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW).

As sought, the MGNREGA employees will be permitted to resume their activities in their respective villages in the State. In compliance with Rs. 534.6573 crore, the State Government-approved wages and the material components and issued them to the respective Block Development Offices for payment of wages and clearance of bills for materials.

The Government had asked the farmers to resume sowing activities in rural areas with immediate effect.
