CJI Dipak Misra to look into several key cases and verdicts before he demits office in October

The Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, who is set to retire later this year, has some crucial judgments to look over before he demits his office. The CJI is expected to deliver verdicts in cases relating to the legality of Aadhaar, ban on women's entry in Sabarimala and whether to refer the Ram Mandir case to a larger bench.

Constitutional Validity of Aadhaar

Hearing on deciding the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar project, is among the major awaited verdicts by the Supreme Court. There has been a lot of criticism about Aadhaar data being publicly displayed on government websites and how this poses a risk to citizen's privacy.

Although, the CJI has concluded the four-month long hearing in the case – considered as the second longest hearing in SC – but there is no deadline for pronouncing the reserved judgment in the Aadhaar case.

Ayodhya case

Dipak Misra is also expected to rule on whether Babri Masjid-Ram temple land dispute case needs to be referred to a larger bench prior to the SC’s final verdict on the case.

The top court has reserved its order on a plea by Muslim groups of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute. In the plea, the Muslim groups had sought reconsideration of a larger bench on the observations made by the SC in 1994 verdict “that a mosque was not integral to Islam”.

Sabarimala case

The judgment on women's entry into the Sabrimala temple is also keenly awaited, especially considering the controversy doing the rounds in light of the Kerala floods. According to reports, a few people had shared rumours on social media that the curse of Lord Ayyappa, caused heavy rains in Kerala, who was angered on allowing women inside the Sabrimala temple premises.
