Chandigarh lawyer pays Rs 25,000 in coins as maintenance to his wife

Quite a drama took place in the court of additional district and sessions judge Rajnish K Sharma on Tuesday, when a Chandigarh lawyer paid a monthly maintenance of Rs 24,600 in coins to his wife.

The lawyer of the Punjab and Haryana High Court had come to the court for paying Rs 25,000 as alimony to his estranged wife.

The judge was left surprised when the lawyer brought a bag filled with Re 1 and Rs 2 coins and kept in front of everyone.

The court then directed the lawyer to get the coins converted into currency notes, but he cited his inability to do so.

Meanwhile, the lawyer’s wife lashed out at her husband and alleged that he was making a mockery of the court by bringing coins worth Rs 25,000. She further said that it was another trick of her husband to “torture and harass her”.

According to the woman, the couple had married in 2014 but the marriage couldn’t last for more than three months and her husband filed for judicial separation and later divorce in October 2015. Following this, the woman filed a plea seeking maintenance from her husband. The lawyer was then directed by the High Court to pay Rs 25,000 as monthly maintenance to his wife.

Justice Sharma adjourned the matter for July 27, so that the money could be counted.
