Centre asks SC more time for setting of Cauvery Management Board

New Delhi: Citing busyness of PM, Ministers in campaigning in Karnataka, the government asked SC to provide it more time to set up Cauvery Management Board. Attorney General   K K Venugopal told the bench headed by CJI Dipak Misra and comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud that matter could not be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval. The AG asked the matter to be heard only after Karnataka polls are over.

The Supreme Court granted time till May 8 to centre, by which it has asked Centre to list steps taken by it for setting up of Cauvery Management Board. The board will have an important role to play as it will be responsible for implementation of SC judgment on distribution of Cauvery river water among Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry.

During the hearing, on listening to AG's arguments, Senior Advocate Shekhar Naphade, appearing for Tamil Nadu, said "This is the end of co-operative federalism and the rule of law in the country. This is the partisan attitude of the union of India to favour Karnataka."

He told the bench about the ongoing summer and the water crisis being faced by citizens of Tamil Nadu. On this the court asked the Karnataka government to release 4 TMC of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu by May 8, but later directed the state to apprise it 'as to how much water can be released'.

The SC has asked both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments to ensure that peace till Cauvery Management Board is set.

Earlier in its verdict given on February16, the court had raised Karnataka's share  by 14.75 tmcft but compensated TN  by allowing extraction of 10 tmcft groundwater from the river basin, saying the issue of drinking water has to be placed on a 'higher pedestal'.
