Accused in Bhagalpur riots: Union ministers bail plea rejected

Bhagalpur, Bihar:  A local court here rejected the bail application of Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey's son and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Arijit Shashwat. He has been accused of inciting communal violence in Bhagalpur district. Several people including few policeman were injured in the incidents of arson, stone pelting and exchange of fire that took place in Bhagalpur recently. Following that Shashwat was arrested by the police and he was sent on 14 days judicial remand. An arrest warrant was already issued against him on March 24.

While refusing the bail, the magistrate told the lawyer representing the accused, that his client's bail will be considered once a case diary is submitted in the Bhagalpur violence incident.

"We had information that Shashwat was at the famous Hanuman temple in the vicinity of Patna junction. A police team reached the spot and arrested him and he has been sent to Bhagalpur", Senior Superintendent of Police, Patna, Manu Maharaj had said.

On his arrest, Shashwat had told reporters "I have given myself up to police in deference to the court order. I have been wrongly accused of evading arrest."

"I was not absconding as I have not committed any crime. If raising slogans in praise of 'Bharat Mata' and 'Sri Ram' is a crime, then I may be called a criminal," he said.

Shashwat and eight others have been named in two FIRs lodged at Nathnagar police station of Bhagalpur. These were lodged post the communal riots that broke out on  March 17 after some people objected to playing of loud music during a procession led by him to celebrate the New Year as per the Hindu calendar.

As usual political parties traded barbs at each other on the incident. The opposition parties accused Nitish govt of going soft on Shashwat and delaying his arrest. Whereas the ruling party members said strong action shows his resolve for good governance.
